VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

The Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand (WAR) has been operating in Thailand for over ten years and is involved in many conservation projects, including a wildlife sanctuary in Phuket and a zoo and animal rescue center in Lopburi. We deal with all species of native animals including gibbons, macaques, bears and elephants. Occasionally we are also called on to assist with exotic wildlife rescued from smugglers.

We recruit paying volunteers to help at our projects that are devoted to animal care; our volunteers are involved in the day-to-day running of the sanctuaries. Jobs may include preparing food, cleaning, and repairing and building new cages. Actual handling of the animals is allowed only in the presence of the management under controlled conditions. I would also point out that unless specifically agreed between the Foundation and the applicant before-hand, we do not offer any opportunities for scientific experiments or research. Our projects are best suited to people with a genuine interest in the care and well being of animals. If you would like to apply to become one of our volunteers you are most welcome. Applicants with veterinary qualifications have the choice of participating in any of our projects.

Although volunteers are required to make a donation for inclusion in one of our projects, this may be waived in certain cases where medicinal or operational equipment needed at the time can be donated. We also at times accept professionals in certain specialized fields free of charge if there is a particular need for their skills at the time of application.

VOLUNTEERING AT WARED

Welcome to the Wildlife Sanctuary at Baan Thalaenork. We hope your stay here will be a rewarding experience – both for you and the animals you will care for. We have prepared this information to help introduce you to some aspects of life at the sanctuary – hopefully it will be helpful to you.

The Wildlife Sanctuary focuses on rehabilitating animals that were kept in captivity – with the hope of releasing them into the wild. For those animals that cannot be released, the Wildlife Sanctuary strives to make sure they are well cared for – and their quality of life is certainly improved. Setting up the Sanctuary in the heart of Baan Thalaenork was no accident. By doing this the sanctuary aims to become part of the community, increase knowledge and generate local understanding of the value of nature and its conservation. Indeed, the sanctuary is already a focal point where both local people and tourists are welcome to come and learn.

While the daily activity schedule for volunteers is less structured here at the sanctuary than at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket, there is always plenty of work to do and the variety of animals found at the sanctuary is much greater than elsewhere. We encourage volunteers to take the initiative - so there is lots of room to make your mark!

Your stay here is important. The work you will do, and the donation you make is vital to the daily operation of the sanctuary. Because we are a non-profit organisation and the need for our services far exceeds what we can supply, volunteers allow us to do much more work than our meager budget would normally allow. Thank you for choosing to spend your time here.
