ANIMAL FACT FILES

Name
KAM-LA
Sex : female
Date of Birth : 3rd March 2004
Species : Crab-eating macaque
(Macaca fascicularis)

History: Kam-la was born in our sanctuary. Her mother was one of the 52 ex-laboratory macaques brought here in 2003 and was found to be pregnant although in very poor condition. Tragically, she did not survive the birth process and Kam-la was hand-reared by our veterinarian.

Name
BECKHAM
Sex : Male
Date of Birth : January 2004
Species : Long-tailed macaque
(Macaca fascicularis)

History: Beckham arrived at WARED on 21st March 2004. He was handed in by a member of the public who had been caring for him for a few weeks, after they found him in a cat’s mouth! After his lucky escape he settled in well in his new home here. As he was so young when he was rescued, he became very tame and is basically considered to be hand-reared so unfortunately can never be released back into the wild.

Name
LUCKY
Sex : Female
Date of Birth : Unknown
Species : White-handed Gibbon
(Hylobates lar)
Description : Black

History :Lucky came to our Bangkok office in 2001. We were tipped off that a group of animals had been found in the home of an American lady who had died in the area. It appears she had kept Lucky as a pet but in such cramped conditions the musculature of her legs had wasted away. She did not know how to sing like a female gibbon should and was generally in a very poor state. We kept her in Bangkok for six months where she built up her strength and confidence in people.

In 2003 she was transferred to WARED. She has gradually developed her own style of song and has settled into her forest home. Her legs have not really improved and she can only swing from her arms and kick at the bars. Despite this, she keeps active in her cage and also likes to sunbathe! Lucky is currently living in a smaller cage than ideal due to space pressures at our sanctuary. She copes well but it is a situation we hope to change in the near future.
